SportsYapper

UX & UI DESIGN, USER TESTING
Project Overview
SportsYapper was a multi-device social app for fans. It gave sports enthusiasts a dedicated space to hangout, banter, and interact with others in real-time as they react to all the highs and lows throughout a game. As the app grew on a global scale, it exceeded expectations and became the #1 U.K. sports app with more than 200,000 downloads as well as winning a UM Curiosity Works Award in 2015.
My Contributions
I led the design strategy for the next generation of SportsYapper and it’s affiliated products for the web, tablet and mobile apps as well as iconography and marketing pieces. When SportsYapper needed a way to engage their fans in the UK and capture them as marketing opportunities, I assisted in creating the design roadmap to enter the UK app marketplace.
When SportsYapper needed a way to engage their fans in the UK and capture them as marketing opportunities, I assisted in creating the design roadmap to enter the UK app marketplace which exceeded our expectations. In just six months, the mobile app reached over 200000 downloads and becoming the number one U.K. sports app.
The U.K. sports media market was saturated with free to air social and commercial platforms with Sky Sports being the dominant cross platform, including a number one app with over 100000 downloads. This was a tough market to break through, but we wanted to help passionate fans share their experiences through our app. We knew these fans didn't always have time to watch live games, but their passion was second to none and they were quick to embrace new technology. This is where SportsYapper rose above the crowd.
We were challenged to look beyond traditional advertising methods and our approach was to deliver precision targeting, frequent messaging and a team framework to mediate conversations around sports. We partnered with the U.K.'s biggest talk based sports program, talkSPORT, to deliver fan inspired content. Our strategy was driven by fans for fans to secure high profile TV sponsorships and airtime in the FA Cup Final and England's World Cup games. Within six months SportsYapper topped the charts with over 200000 downloads, doubling back at its largest competitor, Sky Sports. What's more, over 35 percent of those who downloaded the app between regular users. In fact, Sky Sports has approached sportsYapper to integrate its speed across its own sports platform, an unprecedented move from the opposition.
